Another Example of "You Just Never Know"
Last week I was checking in people who had appointments. An Asian man came up to check in. He is disabled and uses a motorized wheelchair. I checked him in and got him his shopping cart full of food. I wheeled the cart over to a work table so he could take what he wanted. He does not have a car. He placed a big plastic shopping bag on his lap and put the strap around the back of his neck. He proceeded to put whatever he needed in that bag. Most of it was fresh produce. That bag was very heavy and was pulling on his neck. Then he placed a gallon of milk between his feet.
His English is pretty good so Daniel, one of our fabulous interns, and I were talking with him.
He told us since he doesn't drive he would be riding home in his wheelchair with the food. That trip takes him 30 minutes! Daniel said he could take the food and drive it to the man's apartment.
Before the man left, another one of our fabulous interns, Ryver, came over and started talking to the man in Chinese. Even though his English is good, he was so happy to be able to have a conversation in his native language. They spoke for a while and then he left for his 30 minute ride home.
Ryver was in tears as she told us his story. He came to this country 20 years ago. He opened and ran a restaurant. 6 years ago a punk went into the restaurant, robbed him, and savagely beat him. This is the reason he needs the wheelchair. He lost the use of his legs. His arms are damaged. He lost his business. He has no family here. He has nothing. That is the reason he comes to so what else. He comes in proudly and upbeat, friendly and smiling, grateful to have So What Else.
He is an example of you just never know what might happen and when. He is also an example of putting a smile on your face and welcome every day that you have. I will never forget him.
